About Me

Fences on main roads

I'd love to be able to afford a house further off the main road, but unfortunately I'm not there yet. In the meantime, we live near a main road, and we have a huge fence to keep the dogs and the kids inside and the noise out. It's a challenge to find a design for a really big fence that doesn't look like a jail fence! I have researched all of the options I have to keep everyone safe and make our yard as comfortable as possible, and I thought this info might be useful for other homeowners like me.

Advantages of a Chain Link Fence

by Ellen Wallo

Various types of fences offer benefits that make them more suited to particular locations. However, one barrier, chain mesh, provides advantages that you'll appreciate no matter where you establish the structure.

Security

Chain link fences create security for different environments, such as homes, tennis courts, and businesses. The wire mesh is available in varying heights to build residential front fences, high barriers topped with wire for commercial premises, and extremely tall enclosures for tennis courts. The selvedge — the diamond wire design — can have a spiky barb rather than a rounded knuckle at the topmost section of the webbing to make the fencing more unpleasant to climb over.

Durable

Typically consisting of steel, chain mesh fences endure all types of weather conditions. To stop it rusting, the metal might be galvanised, which means it is dipped in molten zinc that forms a coating. Alternatively, PVC-covered mesh protects the steel from weathering. Other crucial elements in these barriers are the posts and rails, also usually made of protected steel that's either galvanised or powder-coated in a colour to match the webbing.

Permanent or Temporary

Not many types of fences are as versatile as chain mesh fences. Not only can you install them in private and commercial environments, but also use them as permanent or temporary barriers. If you're renovating or require protection for a building site and are after a barrier you can shift, then chain link fences are ideal. They can be quickly taken apart, and the wire mesh rolled up to form compact bundles, for easy transport to the new location.

No-Fuss Maintenance

Once you install one of these structures, you'll not have to undertake much maintenance. The various protective layers — galvanising, powder-coating, and PVC encasing — don't require any particular care. If debris accumulates, you can spray the fence with a hose to spruce it up.

Customisable

No matter what the installation, you can customise chain link fencing in various ways to best suit its purpose and environment. For instance, for a commercial property, construct a tall fence with barbed wire. Additionally, to make it extra strong, use thicker gauge wire for the mesh and more solid steel for the posts and railings. Alternatively, for a front yard, install black PVC-coated mesh and black powder-coated posts and rails to create a smart-looking barrier. Other possible colours include black and brown, allowing you to harmonise the fence with the surrounding landscape.
