About Me

Fences on main roads

I'd love to be able to afford a house further off the main road, but unfortunately I'm not there yet. In the meantime, we live near a main road, and we have a huge fence to keep the dogs and the kids inside and the noise out. It's a challenge to find a design for a really big fence that doesn't look like a jail fence! I have researched all of the options I have to keep everyone safe and make our yard as comfortable as possible, and I thought this info might be useful for other homeowners like me.

3 Automatic Gate Designs for New Homeowners

by Ellen Wallo

Comfort and safety are two of the most important things that potential homeowners look for when building a house. It is the reason why most homeowners are going for automated gates rather than standard, manually operated gates. Not only are automated gates a safe bet for preventing unauthorised access to your property, but they are also easy to operate, thanks to the advancement in technology. However, it's vital to understand that automated gates come in various designs, and whichever you choose depends on your style, preferences and needs. While most designs meet the necessary requirements, knowing the options at your disposal is appropriate. Read on.

1. Swing Gates -- If your primary objective is to achieve aesthetic value with your gate, then look no further than automatic swing gates. Although you need enough space to install a swing gate, one advantage is that you do not need a track for the gate to run along during operation. Moreover, you can choose whether you want the gate to swing inwards or outwards, but the decision depends on how much space is available on both sides. Additionally, automated swing gates are the cheapest of the lot. Therefore, swing gates are the most ideal if you're on a budget. That said, automated swing gates are heavy to operate manually; therefore, you need a backup power supply in case of a power outage.

2. Automated Sliding Gates -- As the name suggests, automatic sliding gate operates like a sliding door and must, therefore, have a track installed. The track makes it a more expensive option compared to an automated swing gate. However, sliding gates are arguably the most secure of the lot for the simple fact that they are challenging to open. Instead of locking at the centre, the sliding end of the automated sliding gate inserts inside a concrete or steel column for robust security. The rigid structure also eliminates vulnerable access points, making it difficult for burglars to pry open. The best part is that an automated sliding gate does not require too much space since it runs along a straight line.

3. Telescopic Automated Gate -- Although a telescopic automated gate resembles a sliding gate, at least in movement, the former has sections that overlap each other during operation. It is different from the automatic sliding gate where the entire gate moves as a unit. Some telescopic gates require two or three parallel tracks -- depending on the number of sections -- instead of a single track. However, some designs run on a single track. Since there are many moving parts in an automated telescopic gate, regular maintenance is vital to prevent deterioration.
