About Me

Fences on main roads

I'd love to be able to afford a house further off the main road, but unfortunately I'm not there yet. In the meantime, we live near a main road, and we have a huge fence to keep the dogs and the kids inside and the noise out. It's a challenge to find a design for a really big fence that doesn't look like a jail fence! I have researched all of the options I have to keep everyone safe and make our yard as comfortable as possible, and I thought this info might be useful for other homeowners like me.

Common Fencing Contractor Questions

by Ellen Wallo

When you are looking to build a new fence for your existing home, or you are building a new home with fences, there are some things you must consider before you hire a contractor to erect the fence. So to help you out, here are the answers to some of the most common questions that people ask fencing contractors.

What Are Some Types of Security Fencing? -- It really depends on what type of security you need, but the most common types of security fencing are electric and barbed-wire fences. Electric fences are designed to give off an electrical charge on contact. They are often used in areas that experience heavy crime, or to keep trespassers off property that is dangerous. Electrical fences don't give off enough of a charge to cause real harm, but they will provide a deterrence because the electrical shock is strong enough to discourage further intrusion.

Barbed wire fences are typically used on ranches and farms to keep livestock from wandering off and to keep predators from gaining access to the animals. They are made from coiled steel with twisted barbs that are two-point or four-point, which refers to the number of barbs on the fence. The barbs are sharp enough to cut skin, making them an effective form of security.

What Should One Think About When Installing a Wood Fence? -- Wood fences are very popular because many homeowners love the look of real, natural wood, and the selection of wood is infinite. But when you choose a wood fence, you may want to select a wood type that has a natural resistance to termites such as redwood and cedar, or you can opt for pressure-treated wood, which is injected with chemicals that are toxic to termites. You should also stain and finish your wood for additional protection against the elements, and you may even want to consider using composite wood, which has the same appearance as real wood but is much less expensive.

What Are the Advantages of a Steel Fence? -- Steel fences are becoming a more popular choice because steel offers you strength, durability and a polished sheen that isn't available with a wood fence. When considering a steel fence, make sure you only buy one made from galvanised steel that is dipped in molten zinc, which has a natural resistance to corrosion. Rust is the biggest weakness with steel fences, so a galvanised steel fence gives you maximum protection against rust.

You may also want to select a powder-coated steel, in which paint is applied to the steel through a baking process that fuses it permanently into the steel. Powder coating provides additional protection and ensures that your steel fence will have a longer lifespan.
