Fences on main roads

I'd love to be able to afford a house further off the main road, but unfortunately I'm not there yet. In the meantime, we live near a main road, and we have a huge fence to keep the dogs and the kids inside and the noise out. It's a challenge to find a design for a really big fence that doesn't look like a jail fence! I have researched all of the options I have to keep everyone safe and make our yard as comfortable as possible, and I thought this info might be useful for other homeowners like me.

Reasons To Install A Barbed Wire Fence

by Ellen Wallo

You build a fence to enhance the appearance of your home, farm or ranch, and to protect your property. If you're thinking about changing your existing fence due to wear and tear, or because you want something more reliable, you may want to look into the value of a barbed wire fence.

If you're a first time buyer, here are some practical reasons to invest in this type of fencing:

Affordable -- Compared to a wood or metal fence, barbed wire is cost-effective and doesn't require the same amount of labour time to install. If budget is a big consideration, a barbed wire fence can offer you a great value at a decent price. You don't need a lot of tools or parts to put up a barbed wire fence, which also makes it a DIY-friendly fencing for those of you who want to erect the fence yourself.

Barbed wire fences typically come with the wire itself, and the holding posts that you must anchor into the ground to hold the wire in place. The size, thickness and wood material of these posts is dependent on what size fencing you intend to put up. Remember that barbed wire is what is known as a high-tension wire, which means that if it's not stretched correctly across the holding posts, it can break.

Outstanding Protection -- Although barbed wire fence is used in residential applications, it's most commonly see in country houses, farms and ranches where animals are allowed to roam on the property. If you're a farmer or rancher, a barbed wire fence is an effective protective measure to keep your animals on your property, and to deter predators from hurting your livestock.

Because of the razor tips on the barbs, predators are unable to get through a barbed wire fence without sustaining an injury, and even if they manage to work their way past the barbed wire, the time in which they are trapped in the razor tipped edges allows your or your animals to take evasive action. Barbed wire fences are also wide open, so you can always see any threat or danger as it approaches, unlike boarded fences, which obstruct your line of sight.

Strength -- Barbed wire fences are constructed of coiled steel that is twisted to form strong knots. Most barbed wire fences are available in four-point style and two-point style, which is the number of 'barbs' or razor edges visible on the wire. Depending on the level of security you want, you can buy barbed wire in which the barbs are only a few centimetres apart, or barbed wire with a significant gap between the barbs.

For increased durability, opt for galvanised steel barbed wire, which is hot-dipped in liquid zinc oxide, which is naturally resistant to rust, and extends the life of your fence by limiting corrosion. Steel has a superior tensile strength to wood, and doesn't yellow, crack, break, expand or contract.
