About Me

Fences on main roads

I'd love to be able to afford a house further off the main road, but unfortunately I'm not there yet. In the meantime, we live near a main road, and we have a huge fence to keep the dogs and the kids inside and the noise out. It's a challenge to find a design for a really big fence that doesn't look like a jail fence! I have researched all of the options I have to keep everyone safe and make our yard as comfortable as possible, and I thought this info might be useful for other homeowners like me.

Three Fence Post Options for Your Property

by Ellen Wallo

There are different factors to consider when choosing the most appropriate fence for your property. These aspects include the materials, total costs, ease of installation and the effectiveness of the potential fence. In addition, it is important to choose the right posts to support your fence, especially if you want to install woven, electric or barbed wire products. These features will serve as anchors and reinforcement for the rest of the fencing structure. Here is a brief description of the main fence post options to consider choosing for your property.

Metal Posts

Metal fence posts are made from materials such aluminium and steel. You can purchase them in a variety of lengths and they are readily available in online and offline stores. This choice is advantageous because the metal material is highly durable and resilient even in adverse climatic conditions. Also, you can move the posts if your property's boundaries change or even reuse them in a new home. They are easy to install within a short time since a sledge hammer can drive them in. On the other hand, these posts not aesthetically pleasing compared to wood. You will also require special clips to attach your fencing to the posts.

Wood Posts

Wood post fences are purchased in farm stores or home improvement supply centres. These are made from treated lumber so they are resistant to rot and attack from destructive pests. They will add unique visual appeal to your property and you can choose ideal products of different sizes and heights. However, you should note that treated wood posts are heavy and therefore cumbersome to carry. They are also usually more expensive than metal alternatives and harder to install. Deep holes must be dug to support the weight effectively. Moreover, some of the chemicals used to treat the posts are not healthy for the soil, livestock and people.

Step-in Posts

Step-in posts are generally made from fibreglass or polypropylene so they are lightweight. They are used primarily for temporary fencing for applications such as dividing pasture grounds in farms. The main advantage of step-in posts is the low cost of purchase. They are also easy to install since you can push them into the ground using your foot. Unfortunately, their light weight means that these are not suitable for fencing in large animals which will lean on or hit the fence. In addition, the posts have a significantly shorter lifespan compared to alternatives, and they can only be used to support lightweight fencing materials like electric wires or nets.

Fencing contractors work with a variety of materials and will be able to help you choose the best type of fence post for your property.
